Paul Beck, the medical director at the Uniontown Hospital emergency department, said carbon monoxide is a gas that comes from incomplete combustion. "It is tasteless, odorless, colorless and has 200 times more affinity for hemoglobin binding than regular oxygen So, it leads to basically death by low oxygen being delivered to the tissue," Beck said. When carbon monoxide is present, there are symptoms you should pay attention to, especially within 24 hours after a fire. "It can be, you know, short of breath, lightheaded, dizzy, altered mental status. People can come in an actual coma or unconsciousness. So, it can be very variable. Some people can just have nausea and vomiting. You think you have a GI bug, and it can be carbon monoxide," Beck said.

<a10:updated>2024-11-15T08:53:42-05:00</a10:updated>

WVU Medicine Urgent Care Named 'Best of Marion County' Winner

Congratulations to WVU Medicine Urgent Care at the Fairmont Gateway Clinic, which was named the best urgent care/walk-in clinic in the annual Best of Marion County contest.

<a10:updated>2024-11-15T08:53:06-05:00</a10:updated>

WVU Medicine Represented at American College of Emergency Physicians Conference

An emergency medicine provider from WVU's Division of Geriatrics, Palliative Medicine, and Hospice recently attended the American College of Emergency Physicians conference in Las Vegas.

<a10:updated>2024-10-15T14:37:33-04:00</a10:updated>

Wilderness Medicine organization to offer first aid workshop

The Wilderness and EMS interest group is proud to present a two part workshop on the trauma patient assessment for first aid and wilderness medicine.
