"I am extremely honored to have been selected for this award, and am excited for the opportunities it will provide myself and my lab in the future," she said.

Powell is a third year doctoral candidate in the Lukomski lab, investigating mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in group A Streptococcus as well as alternative treatment strategies.

"This is my fourth year of research in the lab, as I am an IMMB-IMP direct entry student. I love how supportive, collaborative and engaging the IMMB/IMP programs and MICB department are and am thankful for being able to continue the work I started as an undergraduate student," she concluded.

William Frank Gossling created the Gossling Scholarship in memory of his wife, Jennifer, who graduated with her doctorate in microbiology in 1973. This annual award supports graduate student research in the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Graduate Program.
